How to Locate Someone Detained by ICE or Get the Status of an Immigration Court Case

If a loved one has been picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it can be a frightening and confusing experience. You may not know where they are being held, what their legal status is, or what steps to take next. This guide will help you understand how to locate someone who may be in ICE custody and how to check the status of their immigration court case.

1. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System (ODLS)

ICE offers a free tool that helps you search for people currently being held in ICE detention.

You’ll need:

  • The person’s A-Number (Alien Registration Number), and

  • Their country of birth OR

  • Their full name, date of birth, and country of birth

Helpful Tip: The more accurate the information, the better. Misspellings or missing info can lead to no results.

2. Contact a Local ICE Field Office

If you can’t find someone using the locator tool, try calling the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) office closest to where the person was last seen. Officers may be able to tell you if the person is in custody and where they are being held.

Find a field office here: https://www.ice.gov/contact/ero

3. Check the Immigration Court Case Status

If your loved one is in immigration court proceedings, you can check the status of their case.

By Phone:Call the EOIR hotline at 1-800-898-7180. You’ll need their A-Number (Information is available in English and Spanish)

Enter their A-Number to see case status, next hearing date, and more. Thier A-number can be found on their immigration paperwork.

4. Get Legal Help Right Away

Deportation and detention cases can move quickly. It’s important to speak with an experienced immigration attorney who can help you:

  • Locate your loved one

  • Request a bond hearing or parole

  • Fight the deportation case

  • Work toward legal immigration options
