Top 3 Mistakes Religious Workers Make When Applying for a U.S. Visa:

Navigating how to properly apply for an R-1 or religious visa can be complex and confusing. There are a few common mistakes that people make when applying for the U.S. visa. These mistakes can lead to a longer application process that wastes time, money, and effort. Here are three mistakes to avoid when you are applying for a religious worker’s visa to the United States:

  1. Incomplete or Inadequate Documents

The USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) requires many documents to support the application for an R-1 visa. Some of these documents include Form I-129, proof of religious affiliation, proof of qualification, proof of compensation, proof of financial support, photos, letters of support, and more. If any of these documents were to be incomplete or inadequate, the USCIS has the right to deny your visa application. Religious workers who are seeking to apply for a U.S. visa must be sure to proof check each document that they are using to support their R-1 visa application.

  1. Using the R1 Visa as a Permanent Solution Rather Than Temporary

The R-1 visa typically grants religious workers up to a 30-month period of stay with subsequent extensions for up to an additional 30 months. If the USCIS believes an applicant of the R-1 visa intends to stay longer than permitted, they have the right to deny that R-1 visa application.

  1. Lack of Consistency within the Application

From the supporting documents to the answers given in the visa interview, an applicant's answers to any questions asked must be consistent and correct. It is important to show consistency because it makes the applicant appear confident and well informed of the decision they are about to make. If the USCIS deems that in any area the application is not consistent, they have the right to deny the R-1 application. Be sure to keep all answers correct and consistent throughout the entire R-1 application process including information regarding qualifications, job duties, compensation package, and past immigration history.
